Gary and Zack are best mates. Zack is funny, good at football, tells awful jokes - and stinks. That's because he smokes. Breath like a badger's bum (according to Gary). Gary's given up the fags - so why can't Zack?
How do you be yourself and not follow the crowd?
How can smoking affect your health?
What's in a cigarette?
Why is it so hard to quit?
Actions speak louder than words - as the play progresses we see how smoking affects Zack's life. No one wants to stink, "cough up greenies in the morning" (Zack's words), have no money, be out of breath and tired all the time.
This interactive puppet performance gives the audience the opportunity to talk to the characters and influence the outcome of the story by deciding what happens next. It is proving very powerful in getting the message across about smoking and the harm that it can do. It also gives time for children to discuss peer pressure, "temptation" and the importance of "being true to yourself" and not always following the crowd. It was produced in collaboration with young people - smokers and non-smokers - whose input played a major factor in the writing of the show. It is aimed at Key Stage 2 and covers personal, social and health education.
Helpsheets and additional follow-up material are available with this production.
"No Butts was really cool and funny. But the warning was very clear and I'm never going to smoke"
Melanie Trenchard aged 11
"An excellent performance; it was great that the less able were able to pick up the basic facts and ideas and the able children were really stretched and had lots of new information given. The children were really buzzing afterwards but were clear about the message" Lizzie Reynolds Manor Court Community Primary
